WORLD OCEANS DAY

Today, June 8th, is the World Oceans Day! From Ocean i3 we work to develop knowledge that contributes to its preservation and valorization. We also promote employability, learning and innovation linked to the “blue economy”, a concept that is based on the economic potential of the ocean from a sustainability paradigm.

According to the United Nations:

“the ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, houses most of the earth’s biodiversity and is the main source of protein for more than millions of people worldwide.”

From 2018 until today at Ocean i3, we have worked side by side with 25 social agents from the Basque-Aquitaine cross-border coastline and teams of students from 16 different disciplines (including Communication, Criminology, Business Administration and Management, Biology, Nursing, etc.) have contributed knowledge and made interventions related to 14 challenges about the pollution by plastics. As a result, a total of 70 individual projects have been carried out, including Undergraduate Thesis Projects, Master's Dissertations, tutorialized projects, etc. There have also been 27 practices associated with the Ocean i3 project and its mission to reduce plastic pollution.

Days like today help us become more aware of the need to learn and produce knowledge about the oceans and encourage us to enhance the opportunities provided by the blue economy by consolidating commitment to its sustainability.
