1st Ocean i3 Cross-Border Workshop 20-21: We are already starting to work on the challenges

Actualizado: 10 feb 2021

Last Friday, February 5, the first of the 5 workshops 20-21 was held, which brought together the Ocean i3 university community and the social agents of the Basque-Aquitaine coast. The main objective was to define collaborative projects around a common theme: the pollution of the oceans by plastics.

In this edition, 9 social agents are participating (associations, companies, museums, town councils, foundations, sports unions ...) 43 students and 30 teachers from 17 different disciplines. Each one contributing their grain of sand and sharing ideas and knowledge on how to face the 5 selected challenges:

  1. Mater Museo: How to transmit environmental awareness messages so that citizens can take action?

  2. Kutxa Ekogunea: Identification of sectors and alternatives in the project "Domestic water to reduce the consumption of bottled water".

  3. The GAIA team and the Gernika-Lumo city council together with Rivages Pro Tech: Development of a pilot for non-intrusive technological solutions for the collection of plastics in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve

  4. Surfrider Fundación Europa Delegation of Spain: Protect the oceans together with Surfrider by making their projects known to different sectors.

  5. UNSS 64 (Union of School Sports of the Atlantic Pyrenees, with the participation of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa of Sports Direction): promote greater visibility of the job opportunities generated by the cross-border blue / green economy sector.

Multilingualism was one of the main pillars of the meeting where communication was possible in 4 languages (Spanish, French, Basque and English), generating a multicultural environment that allows a free and effective communication environment.

The will to learn and the commitment of both the agents and the participants was palpable in this first stage of the process. The confluence of different disciplines and cultures contributed diversity in points of view and thus, we achieved a broader and at the same time detailed photograph of the challenges.

The workshop was held entirely in the digital environment. We use two platforms with which the communication and interaction between the participants were managed. Gather allowed us to bring the Ocean i3 community together remotely just as we would have done in person. Miro, a visual whiteboard for online collaboration, was the resource to document the entire process in a participatory way.

This first meeting has allowed us to activate the teams that will continue working in the following workshops where they will delve into their challenges. The Oktonine platform will be our main online collaborative tool. Thanks to it, the Ocean i3 community will be able to continue working on its projects and sharing content to reach the next workshop on March 12, 2021, with progress and proposals on its challenges.
