My name is Maria Ballesteros Rivas and I am in charge of environment and education at Surfrider Spain.
We are the territorial delegation of the NGO Surfrider Foundation Europe, which will celebrate this year its 30th anniversary protecting the ocean.
We participate in Ocean i3 project with the challenge "We are all Surfrider" to find solutions together to involve citizens to be part of our community and to care about the protection of the ocean. We are very happy with the experience of working together with the professors and students from different universities. Exchanging ideas about the challenges facing the ocean is very enriching for all parties and helps us to improve and focus our relationship.
In Surfrider we work for the protection of the ocean at different levels: from awareness raising in the field, through education in the classroom at all levels, to work with the different administrations to improve policies. We have clear that to achieve a healthy state of the ocean we have to involved the whole of society and work together.
One of our pillars is to work with the local communities; to know them, to know the problems that exist in their environment and to give them the tools to empower them and make them participate in the work of protecting the ocean. To do this, we usually carry out beach collections to show what kind of waste is on our shores through the Ocean Initiatives program , where anyone can organize a collection on their beach!
We also have the Ocean Campus website where there are many free resources to learn about the problems affecting the ocean in a dynamic and enjoyable way. Continuing to empower the community, when several people want to do more in their environment and in a daily basis, there is the possibility of joining or creating a local group of Surfrider volunteers.
If you are interested in knowing more, you can contact us on our social networks @surfriderespana, we would be delighted to hear from you!
